Why do we need IP Address when the MAC address is unique? Can't we communicate with only MAC address?


IP addresses (network addresses) are used for just transferring information from one network to other, travelling of information among networks via. IP address.

Mac addresses (physical addresses) are actually used for distribution of information.
1) Carrying of information from one network to another.
2) Distribution of information (resources) is based upon Mac address.

Ping is a network utility program to test if a particular host is reachable. It   uses the internet connection to send out packets of data to a host and are sent back  the packets to the source computer. So we can know if any packets were lost. We can  see the amount of time it takes to communicate with the host. Command: ping target [-t] [-n count] [-w timeout] [-l size] target - Destination host to ping [-t] - Ping until you force to stop [-n count] - Send number of requests (default 4 requests) [-w timeout] - Set timeout in milliseconds (default 1,000) [-l size] - Set size of packet (default size 32 bytes) There are more options available.
